Talent is the number one issue for CEOs around the world. This is because we are living in a knowledge economy and there is a talent shortage. Companies need employees with the right skills and attitude to fit their culture and help the business to achieve its objectives. ‘Talent’ is the word used to describe these ‘ideal’ employees, while ‘employer brand’ refers to your company’s image and its ability to attract those who have the optimal skills, qualities and experience to want to join you, rather than your competitors. Managing talent, therefore, is about attracting, developing, engaging and keeping talented employees.
Great talents are the most lovely and often the most dangerous fruits on the tree of humanity. They hang upon the most slender twigs that are easily snapped off.
Managing talent well takes time, combined with high levels of self-awareness and confidence. Great talents present you, their manager, with challenges; they take up your precious time and then get fast-track promotion out of your team. Also, they are bright and know their value, so they can challenge your authority and your patience.
On the other hand, you can learn a lot from them, and they could be employing you in the future, in which case you will be getting a payback on your investment!
