Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity and inclusion are all about valuing the differences between people and understanding the ways in which those differences can contribute to a richer, more creative and more productive business environment. It is the recognition that we are all different in some ways, but similar in others. It is those differences that make us unique, and by maximising on our differences and the potential held within, we are able to create advantage. Inequality or disadvantage happens when difference is not recognised or valued, which can therefore lead to prejudice or discrimination, mainly due to stereotyping assumptions, attitudes and behaviours.
The law protects people against being unjustly or unfairly treated or disadvantaged. The legally ‘protected characteristics’ are age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religious belief and non belief, sex and sexual orientation.
Diversity and inclusion are both important and must be approached together in order to leverage each individual’s unique talents to achieve a common goal or objective.
Having a culture and environment in which everyone can thrive and reach their potential will bring many benefits.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
