What are you good at?

If personal branding is about how you stand out from the crowd, this step in the process is critical. Self knowledge is crucial to developing your brand successfully. Take time to go through this exercise, which will allow you to identify the skills and qualities you want to stand out and be known for.

Once you have completed the exercise, you should have a good idea of the key elements of your brand.

Exercise

Step one

Write down 20 skills or good qualities you have that distinguish you from your colleagues. People often struggle to get started with this, so in thinking about these, consider the following questions:

  1. What do you feel are your greatest strengths?
  2. What talents do you have?
  3. When are you at your best?

Also consider scenarios outside of work. Maybe the job you have does not allow you to shine?

Having established this list, rate yourself against each, giving yourself a score out of 10 for how well you do it and how much you enjoy it. Identify the top five – those with the highest combined scores. These are likely to be the things you naturally do well.

Step two

Now think about how you operate and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How do you relate to people and how would you describe the style you adopt when working with others?
  2. How do you get results? What process steps do you take to do this?
  3. How do you put order and structure into your work life?
  4. How do you learn and develop? What drives your learning and development?

Write down your answers; they will contain clues to how you work with others and get things done. It’s best to write out specifics rather than shorthand. Think through the last time you delivered something significant or joined a new team.

Step three

From steps one and two, summarise what the information says about you. You should aim to get this into two or three sentences.
