The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Drugs, Caroline Flint, has stated that

It is estimated that the cost of drug and alcohol misuse in terms of crime, absenteeism at work and sickness is in excess of £20 billion. Faced with such a stark picture, it is important that all employers, particularly those in safety-critical areas of employment, are aware that drug and alcohol misuse is a serious problem, affecting most companies, either directly or indirectly.
