Competency Frameworks

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Aristotle

Many of us have role models who, we feel, epitomise excellence at work and who we would like to emulate. The difficulty lies in identifying what they do that means that they achieve excellence on a consistent basis.

It isn’t just a question of learning the skills that are needed, it is also about

  • Knowing how to put the skills into practice
  • Being able to apply your knowledge appropriately
  • Being confident in your ability to reach the necessary standard time after time.

It is easy to be put off by the term ‘competency framework’.

Don’t be!

Competency frameworks provide you, as a manager, with a structure within which you can identify what the excellent performers do on a day-to-day basis in terms of applying their knowledge and skills. They help you apply this effectively to yourself and with your team and your organisation.

Using a mix of theory, practical examples and exercises, this topic will help you

  • Understand the principle of competency frameworks
  • Learn how to use them with your team and your organisation
  • Use competencies to mobilise the knowledge, skills and abilities of your people to help them consistently maintain high performance.
