Drugs and Alcohol

The solution

The most efficient way to prevent or reduce the impact on your organisation of drug and alcohol misuse by your employees is through creating and implementing an effective drugs and alcohol policy.

A good policy should not intrude upon the individual’s privacy and human rights. It should, however, address issues where, as a result of drug and/or alcohol misuse, a person’s health or behaviour adversely affects their conduct, safety or performance at work. The policy should be based primarily upon prevention and, when this fails, provide guidance for detecting the problem, acting upon it and therefore providing a solution.

The organisation position on drugs and alcohol may vary according to the nature of the job or the organisation. A strict no tolerance rule could be suitable for some organisations, whereas others may permit social drinking at lunchtime. Whatever the position may be, a policy is required to guard against the consequences of misuse.
