Sample workshop agenda

The following is a model to help with workshop design.

This facilitated team-building workshop was designed to increase teamwork in a well-established work group. The promised outcomes were

  1. Development of team skills
  2. Skills in managing conflict
  3. Increased communication skills.

Outcomes were measured by

  • Feedback from participants at the end of the workshop
  • Assessment by manager and staff after two weeks to agreed criteria.
8.30 Welcome, introductions and outline of programme for the day
Housekeeping and ground rules
8.45 Clearing session – what does each participant need to say to be fully present and ready to get to work?
(Note: if there is a lot of baggage to be cleared, this session will need to be extended, in which case continue with the clearing and move the programme times back. Shorten the conflict management section as needed. You will find you have already covered some of these points.)
9.00 Vision for the team (presented by manager and enlarged by team)
9.15 Trust-building exercise
9.30 What makes an effective team? (Identifying characteristics of an effective team, reaching agreement on checklist and assessing present team through individual assessment)
10.15 Tea break
10.30 Clarification and analysis of power relationships, leadership, roles and tasks; sharing strengths and weaknesses through self and peer assessment; identifying areas of agreement and differences in perception; participants are to choose an area needing improvement to work on and design a plan for this
12.00 Lunch
12.30 Conflict management, including assertion skills, sharing feelings, and making requests and promises (using role plays)
2.00 Team exercise (building team and velocity)
