The modern workplace is frequently the setting for disputes and conflicts. Mediation skills in a manager’s toolbox will help to release them and their staff from any stress, anxiety and fear linked with settling disputes. Alongside performance issues, settling staff conflict is highlighted as a challenging task for managers. In-house surveys have shown that managers are not confident about resolving conflict, despite realising how important it is.

With this in mind we have written this topic for busy modern managers who want a practical tool at their fingertips and, indeed, for anyone who is involved in a conflict and looking for a practical, non-combative solution. Mediation is a positive, fast-acting and confident way to support staff. It is for managers interested in removing the barriers that get in the way of harmony and efficiency, and empowering staff to be in charge of their own solutions.

This topic aims to make mediation skills accessible and user friendly to line managers and to individuals. It explains what it is, when to use it and how to do it. It also includes some useful guidance on how to ‘nip things in the bud’ before they escalate into crises.
